As the crisp fall air sets in, it can be tempting to cozy up indoors and put off outdoor workouts until next spring. But with the right mindset—and the right gear—fall can be one of the best seasons to keep exercising outside and keeping up your workouts with Outdoor Fitness. It’s important to adjust your wardrobe so you stay comfortable and motivated to keep moving.
Dressing for the Cooler Weather with Outdoor Fitness
Here’s tips on how to dress for Outdoor Fitness in the upcoming colder months:
1. Layer Smart
The key to staying warm while working out in cooler weather is layering. Start with a moisture-wicking base layer to keep sweat off your skin. When needed add an insulating layer, like a fleece or lightweight jacket, to trap heat. With or without the insulating layer when not needed, top it off with a breathable, wind-resistant outer layer to protect against chilly winds. Layering allows you to take off a layer as needed!
2. Protect Your Extremities
Your head, hands, and feet are the most vulnerable to heat loss in cold weather. A light beanie or headband can help retain body heat, and a good pair of gloves will keep your hands warm and functional for Outdoor Fitness exercises. Don’t forget wool or moisture-wicking socks to keep your feet warm and dry. Avoid cotton socks – Cotton is Rotton!
3. Choose the Right Fabrics
Avoid cotton (Cotton is Rotton!!) as it holds moisture and can make you feel cold once you start sweating. Opt for synthetic fabrics or merino wool, which wick moisture away from your body while still providing warmth.
4. Reflective Gear/Headlamp
Fall days are shorter, and you may find yourself exercising in low-light conditions. Make sure you wear reflective clothing or accessories to stay visible to drivers and other pedestrians during early morning or evening outdoor activities. Dollarstore reflective bands slapped on the arms or legs work great as well as inexpensive head lamps from Canadian Tire or Amazon.
5. Footwear for Traction
Wet leaves, mud, and early frost can make paths slippery. Wear shoes with good traction to prevent slips and falls, and consider trail running shoes for extra grip.
With these tips in mind, you’ll be prepared to continue your Outdoor Fitness journey throughout the cooler months, no matter how brisk the weather gets. Don’t let the colder temperatures slow you down—fall is a beautiful time to get outside and enjoy your Outdoor Fitness workouts!
